How Does Hair Grow? Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle

Hair may look as though it grows continuously, but each strand actually follows a repeating cycle.
It grows, slows down, rests, sheds, and then begins again.
Understanding this cycle helps explain why some daily shedding is normal, why hair length varies from person to person, and why thinning is different from ordinary shedding.
The Simple Answer
Every hair grows from a small living structure beneath the skin called a hair follicle.
The follicle does not produce the same strand forever. Instead, it moves through different stages of activity.
Scientists usually describe three main phases:
- Anagen: active growth
- Catagen: transition
- Telogen: rest
Each follicle follows its own schedule. That is why all the hair on your scalp does not grow or shed at the same time.

Anagen: The Active Growth Phase
Anagen is the stage when the follicle is actively producing the hair strand.
Cells near the bottom of the follicle divide quickly and help form new hair. As new cells are produced, the strand becomes longer.
On the scalp, this phase may last from about two to eight years. At any given time, approximately 80–90% of scalp follicles are in anagen.
The length of this growth phase helps influence how long a person’s hair may become before the strand enters the next stage.
This is one reason maximum hair length can vary from person to person.
Catagen: The Transition Phase
Catagen is a much shorter stage.
During this phase, active hair production stops. The lower portion of the follicle begins to shrink, and the strand separates from some of the structures that supported its growth.
Catagen generally lasts about one to three weeks.
Although the follicle is changing, this stage is part of the normal hair cycle. It does not automatically mean that the follicle is damaged.
Telogen: The Resting Phase
Telogen is often called the resting phase.
The follicle is no longer actively lengthening the existing strand, but important biological signals are still occurring beneath the skin.
During this stage, the older strand remains in place for a time and may later be released as the follicle prepares for another growth cycle.
Telogen generally lasts about two to three months.
Afterward, the follicle may return to anagen and begin producing a new strand.
Why Doesn’t All Our Hair Shed at Once?
Human scalp follicles normally work independently.
One follicle may be actively growing a strand while another is resting and another is preparing to release an older strand.
Researchers describe this as asynchronous cycling.
Because the follicles are not all in the same phase, the scalp usually maintains coverage while individual strands grow and shed at different times.
Why Can Wash-Day Shedding Look Excessive?
Loose hairs do not always fall immediately.
In curly, coily, braided, or tightly styled hair, released strands can remain caught among neighboring hairs. When the hair is finally washed or detangled, several days of shedding may appear at once.
This can look dramatic, even when the strands were released gradually.
The most helpful comparison is usually not one wash day, but whether the amount has changed significantly from your normal pattern.
What Influences the Hair Cycle?
Hair cycling can be affected by many factors, including:
- Genetics
- Age
- Hormones
- Nutrition
- Illness
- Stress
- Medications
- Overall health
- Scalp conditions
The research review also explains that hair cycling is controlled by complex communication between different cells and signaling pathways inside the follicle.
This is why hair growth cannot be reduced to one ingredient or one simple cause.
What Happens During Some Forms of Thinning?
Normal shedding is not the same as progressive thinning.
In androgenetic alopecia, genetically susceptible follicles may spend less time in the active growth stage. Over time, they can produce strands that are shorter, finer, and less pigmented.
Scientists call this process follicle miniaturization.
It involves genetics, hormones, cellular signaling, and other contributing factors. It is more complex than seeing a few loose hairs in a brush.
Can Hair Products Restart the Growth Cycle?
Cosmetic products can help care for the hair and scalp, but they should not be described as restarting a medically altered hair cycle without strong evidence.
Hair-care products may help:
- Clean the scalp and hair.
- Improve softness and manageability.
- Reduce friction and breakage.
- Support a comfortable scalp environment.
- Protect the visible hair fiber.
These benefits are valuable, but they are different from treating a medical cause of hair loss.
When Should a Change Receive Attention?
Consider speaking with a qualified healthcare professional when you notice:
- Sudden or unusually heavy shedding
- Visible thinning
- Widening of the part
- Bald patches
- Scalp pain, redness, scaling, or inflammation
- Hair changes following illness, major stress, rapid weight loss, or medication changes
Hair changes can sometimes reflect what is happening elsewhere in the body.

Hair growth, rest, and shedding are connected parts of the same natural cycle.
A strand does not grow forever, and seeing some loose hair does not automatically mean that something is wrong.
